Bal Niketan

Our Mission, Approach And Challenges
Bringing up together a large number of children (both boys and girls) in social distress of different backgrounds, age groups and temperaments is indeed a daunting task. As stated in the Introduction, our mission and vision is to provide solace and soccur to these children and ensure their proper growth and development in all respects to enable them to stand on their feet and live with dignity as good citizens of the society.

To realize this great mission, Bal Niketan has to strive continuously to remain focused on the following major areas of its endeavour which form an integral part of the living experience at Bal Niketan for ensuring proper growth and development of these children:

i. Providing good living conditions to the children in terms of proper lodging, food, clothing and health care in a secure and healthy environment with the support of mature and dedicated efforts of the management and staff.

ii. Imparting good education to the children including professional courses through different schools and institutions with proper arrangements for completion of home work/studies and required follow up actions while encouraging hard work and self discipline. Coaching to the needy children is also ensured through the volunteers as well as part-time paid tutors for better results.

iii. Continuously reinforcing good values, character building and overall development of the children through a variety of co-curricular activities. These include sports, educational/ adventure trips, arts and crafts workshops and interactive talks/discussions on some important subjects like character building, aspects of Indian culture, motivation, career choices etc. Other such activities comprise of celebration of National days/festivals, children’s birthdays and their special achievements, cultural activities/events and picnics/movies for education and entertainment. There is also a system of assignment of various “Home” duties to children in Bal Niketan to prepare them to look after themselves, inculcate team spirit and to shoulder responsibility.

iv. Providing continuous encouragement and motivation to the children to put in their best in studies and other activities and focus on their goals to reach their potential with a positive and forward looking vision of their future. This is done through encouraging hard work and self discipline by giving personal attention to each child and through interactive discussions/awareness sessions, by periodical review of their overall performance and conduct and taking remedial actions for improvement including professional counselling, if so required.

Thus, taking proper care of the children at Bal Niketan is a complex and difficult task requiring continuous concerted efforts both on the part of the staff and management of Bal Niketan. The problems, concerns and aspirations of each child have to be handled with maturity, trust, understanding, compassion and sometimes by professional counselling within the frame-work of our vision and approach. There has to be love, flexibility, discipline and firmness in solving the problems faced by the children. Emphasis is also paid to inculcate the human values among children of Bal Niketan. At times, we do have our share of disappointments, but with the devotion and commitment of Bal Niketan staff and gracious support of our members, donors and well-wishers, Bal Niketan continues to march forward towards its cherished goals. The continuity of staff and management has also helped us in discharging our onerous but rewarding responsibilities as parents, friends and guides to these growing children.

Modest effort has been made in this Annual Report to provide the details of Bal Niketan activities including a write – up on our boy Neeraj Kapoor.
